Welcome Message

Dear Colleagues,

On behalf of the European Structural Integrity Society (ESIS) and the organizing Zhiliang Zhangcommittee of the 20th European Conference on Fracture (ECF20), it is my great pleasure to extend our warm welcome to everyone attending the conference.

The ECF belongs to the well-established series of international conferences held under the auspices of ESIS. As one of the premier conferences in the field of fracture, fatigue and structural integrity, the ECF takes place every two years since 1976. This is the first time the ECF comes to Norway and we are privileged to have this opportunity to host the ECF20 at NTNU and Trondheim. Norwegian scientists have for decades worked on the science of fracture and fatigue and their engineering applications, in particular, to the offshore industry.

ECF20 will focus on all aspects and scales of fracture and fatigue of engineering materials, components and structures. This ranges from basics to future trends, with special emphasis on multi-scale and multi-physics approaches, and applications to new materials and challenging environments. We received 702 abstracts from 46 countries all over the world, and finally 536 presentations will be given at the conference. In addition to the 96 oral sessions and 5 ePoster sessions, the conference is equipped with plenary speeches given by 15 world class scientists, two ESIS medal winner lectures, 40 sessional keynote speeches, and a Young scientist competition session. ECF20 will also feature a summer school on fracture modeling and assessment two days before the conference and a panel discussion about how to teach fracture mechanics in the future. It is also worth noting that the conference proceedings, consisting of 355 high quality conference papers will be published with open-access by Elsevier’s Procedia Materials Science before ECF20 starts.

We would like to thank all authors for their contributions. We are grateful for ESIS, the members of the international advisory board, and the members of the national committee for their efforts, help and promoting of the conference. Special thanks to sponsors for their support of ECF20.

We hope you will enjoy ECF20 and the stay in Trondheim!

Looking forward to meeting you!

Best regards,

Zhiliang Zhang
